Agricultural Environments
Miaoli County covers about 182,000 hectares of land, of which about 19% are cultivatable land. Fifty nine percent of the agricultural land is paddy field land and the remaining 41% are dry land. The soil types in this area are rather complicated due to the long-term rock weathering, landscape change and human influence. In general, the plain is comprised of alluvial soils, loam, and the terrain and low altitude mountain areas are mostly yellow soils, red soils, colluvial soils, lithosoils, etc.

The climate in the seashore plain area and its neighboring terrain area belong to tropic weather with annual average temperature of 20-22℃. The annual rainfall in terrain areas is about 2,000 mm which is higher than that in low plains. Agricultural population is about 203,600 from about 43,000 household families that comprises of 36% of the population in Miaoli County. Toufen Township has the highest population followed by Yuanli and Houlong Townships. Major crops and fruit trees are rice, sweet potato, vegetables, watermelon, citrus, bamboo shoot, grape, pear, plum, persimmon, strawberry and carambola.
